Our ‘Spotlight On’ series showcases a different member of our diverse team each month.
In our first ‘Spotlight On’ of 2024, we find out more about Jemima Gosmore, an account manager in our healthcare division. Read more about Jemima below.
What is your specialism?
I’m an account manager in Freshwater’s healthcare team, which means I specialise in NHS and health and social care communications. I support our clients with a range of activity, including stakeholder engagement programmes, reactive media relations, and reputational audits and analysis.
What does a typical day look like for you?
Anyone in communications will tell you that no two days look the same – and it’s true! However, whether I’m in the office, working from home or on site with a client, I try and start every day by checking industry news so I can brief clients on anything urgent that has emerged overnight. I’m currently supporting a mental health organisation with its media relations so, at the moment, I’m drafting a lot of press releases, responding to media enquiries and planning upcoming content.
For my NHS accounts, I’m usually busy planning stakeholder engagement events – such as focus groups and town hall meetings – and delivering supporting content, including briefings and presentations.
On days with fewer client meetings and more down time, I try and get stuck into any longer-form content on my list, such as audits or engagement reports.
What do you enjoy most about working at Freshwater?
Tackling the challenges and turning them into opportunities. Being able to work with prolific clients across the health and care landscape on incredibly important work has been hugely rewarding – if a little daunting to begin with! My Freshwater colleagues have always encouraged me to approach work with a ‘give it a go’ mindset – which I quickly realised was the best way to learn.
What made you want to pursue a career in healthcare comms?
I knew at university (where I studied English) that I wanted to work with words. Following a brief PR internship which I enjoyed immensely, I started at Freshwater and luckily joined the healthcare team, where my interest in news and current affairs was put to good use. The news agenda never slows down in health, so the work is as exciting as it is important.
How do you like to spend your free time?
Exploring London, particularly the restaurants, parks, museums and cafes. I also love travelling and, when I’m not out and about, I’m at home reading just about anything and everything!
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself
I like to think that my first part-time job was in fact in PR, when, aged 13, I became the voluntary junior press officer for an equine sporting organisation.
