Hapus Mental Wellbeing Animation
As part of wider efforts to improve public understanding of mental wellbeing in Wales, Freshwater was brought on board to create a compelling bilingual animation that could spark meaningful conversations and support behaviour change. The project called for an inclusive, accessible and visually engaging resource that would resonate with both the public and professionals, while tackling a complex and often misunderstood subject.
Brief
Freshwater was commissioned to create a bilingual animation for the Hapus programme, an initiative that aims to improve public understanding of mental wellbeing across Wales. The animation needed to educate and empower people to recognise the factors that influence mental wellbeing at both an individual and community level, and to highlight the importance of making time for activities that positively impact mental health. The animation had to be visually engaging, inclusive, and accessible, reflecting real-life narratives and appealing to a wide audience, including professionals, the public and public health partners.

Delivery
Drawing on our experience of developing public health animations during the pandemic, including a series for the ‘Help Us Help You’ campaign, we approached this project with a thorough understanding of both the subject matter and the target audiences.
We implemented a robust end-to-end production process, ensuring flexibility to meet deadlines and incorporate feedback.
The animation was designed to reflect real-life experiences and be accessible to all, using a lay narrative style that resonates with adults across Wales. We ensured that all Welsh language elements met the Welsh Language Standards, working closely with PHW’s translation team and our own in-house Welsh speakers to maintain consistency and cultural accuracy.

Results
The final five-minute animation was delivered on time and in line with the client’s specifications, ready for distribution across a variety of platforms and formats. Key outcomes included:
- One bilingual (Welsh/English) five-minute animation with subtitles
- Voiceover recordings in both Welsh and English, using inclusive and authentic tones
- High-quality visuals developed to engage a wide demographic and reflect diverse experiences
- Six subtitled short-form edits for use on social media platforms
- A bank of still images created from the animation for wider campaign use
- All source files, audio, visual assets, licensing agreements and subtitles submitted to PHW for future use
Backed by extensive audience insight and aligned with the Hapus programme’s goals, the animation effectively communicates the importance and complexity of mental wellbeing. It’s a powerful resource that supports ongoing public health efforts and encourages conversations that matter.
