Spotlight On: Benedict Mosimi
In our ‘Spotlight On’ series, we find out more about a different member of our team each month.
Benedict Mosimi is an account assistant (intern) in our healthcare team, and is based in our London office. Read more about her below.
What is your specialism?
I specialise in health public relations and communications, delivering media monitoring and analysis, and content for online platforms for clients.
I also support Freshwater’s multiple NHS client accounts with lots of research, such as stakeholder mapping, and lead on Freshwater’s internal healthcare newsletter.
What does a typical day look like for you?
No day is ever the same as client projects require different tasks. On a typical day, I would use our media monitoring platform to identify news coverage about clients and scan through industry leaders’ sites for the latest health policy announcements for the newsletter.
Then, I move onto client work. We’re currently providing communications support to a mental health organisation, for which I’ve been undertaking research to inform a stakeholder mapping exercise.
I usually then move onto other tasks to support the healthcare team. This could be horizon scanning, which involves looking for events and key dates for our team’s tracker, or proofreading and drafting copy for key documents.
I always end the day by reviewing news coverage for clients and producing round-up reports.
What made you want to pursue a career in communications?
For my bachelor’s degree, I studied politics and international relations. I quickly realised that I didn’t want to go into politics, but had no idea what I wanted to do. I heard that a lot of politics graduates go on to work in public relations, but thought I was different.
However, in my second year, I became a PR representative for a student-led initiative called PENGals, a student space for women of colour and non-binary people of colour. This gave me an introduction to the PR landscape, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
After a fun gap year, I decided to do some research on career paths and was reminded of public relations. Luckily, I found this internship at Freshwater and am very happy that I pursued this career path.
What do you enjoy most about working at Freshwater?
My favourite thing about working at Freshwater is that I am constantly learning. Before joining, I had never worked in a healthcare setting, which at first gave me a bit of imposter syndrome. However, the healthcare team has supported me throughout by encouraging me to attend different events and training days, briefing me on a variety of sector specific tasks, and even passing on a 712-page book on the history of the welfare state!
How do you like to spend your free time?
In the evenings, I usually spend my free time on long walks to catch the sunset, with friends or cooking. I also try to read a book but usually end up falling asleep.
On the weekend, I make sure to have something planned for Saturday – whether it’s dinner, the theatre, or quality time – and on Sundays I always go to church and brunch with friends!
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?
I am currently self-teaching my second instrument – the bass guitar!
