Spotlight On: Hannah Thompson

For our second ‘Spotlight On’ of 2024, we caught up with Hannah Thompson, a senior account director who has worked at Freshwater since 2019.

What is your specialism?

I specialise in integrated marketing, meaning I manage large-scale marketing and communications campaigns for both private and public sector clients by devising strategies using data and audience insight, creating channel plans, and coordinating Freshwater’s service specialists to ensure objectives are met and clients are happy.

What does a typical day look like for you?

While no two days look the same, I always start by checking out the news and social media to stay up-to-date on anything that may affect our clients. I then move on to other tasks, which range from drafting always-on channel plans to developing new brand or campaign concepts, from collaborating with team members to explore how we can best optimise live campaigns and secure the best results for our clients to providing support and guidance to team members, and so much more.

What’s your favourite thing about Freshwater?

The team! I am lucky to work with an amazing group who constantly provides support and opportunities to learn and grow my skillset. I am also lucky to have the opportunity to work closely with directors who specialise in integrated comms across both the public and private sectors.

Another perk about working at Freshwater is the ‘FW Flex’ policy, which means I can work from home for part of the week and work flexible hours as and when needed. Our  ‘Dress for Your Day’ policy also means  I can come to work in more casual business attire on days when I don’t have client meetings. All of this makes for a much more relaxed and welcoming place to work.

Have you always wanted to work in marketing?

Working in marketing was not something I had planned for the long term.

I originally went to university to study a BA in politics and then went on to do a postgraduate diploma in journalism. I quickly realised that I didn’t want to pursue journalism and started working in PR, before slowly moving into more marketing-focused roles as my career progressed.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love to travel and often go skiing with friends when I can.

When I’m not trying to secure a (very slow) PB on the slopes, my weekends are usually taken up with D.I.Y. having bought a very old cottage in the Herefordshire countryside a few years ago. I can now add tiling and fitting doors and skirting boards to my CV!

Share an interesting fact about yourself

Last year I approached Cats Protection to adopt a set of siblings and walked away with a litter of three kittens instead!
